08.02.2021

The bbw Hochschule is already expanding its spectrum of business, industrial engineering and engineering sciences for the coming winter semester: educational and social sciences will be added as a fourth department.

The bbw Hochschule is launching the first English-language Master's programme in International Technical Vocational Education and Training (ITVET) in the capital region. It imparts in-depth vocational education and training science, practice-related vocational education and training competences on central topics - with a regional, national and international focus. This opens up perspectives for graduates - for example, in the design of VET schools in the international field, in VET policy and educational counselling, in state education administration, international education work or in adult education and (inter-)company continuing education. Other fields of work include personnel and organisational development in companies or education management in associations, chambers and public institutions, including institutions of international development cooperation. Work in the field of teaching/learning materials and vocational education and training research can also be pursued.

The modular continuing education programme can be completed full-time with a standard period of study of four semesters. Prerequisites for admission to the Master's programme are a first qualifying university degree (Bachelor's degree) or an equivalent university degree in an educational science or technical or natural science field - from a university or college recognised in Germany. In addition, applicants from Germany and abroad must demonstrate at least advanced knowledge of the English language (B2 language level according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages or equivalent).

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gebhard Hafer, Rector of the bbw Hochschule: "It is high time to support the economy and authorities with stronger expertise in economics as well as in Educational and Social Sciences. Our new department therefore fits in perfectly with our brand essence as a university of business in Berlin and Brandenburg, with our and the capital region's international orientation. Finally, we are also drawing on the knowledge and experience that the bbw, as a business education organisation, has gained here over decades in vocational training and continuing education. We want to strengthen our profile with educational and social science study programmes - and that of Berlin's higher education landscape."

Prof. Dr. Tanja Mansfeld, ITVET Anchor Professor: "The English-language Master's programme is to be followed by further Bachelor's programmes in the field of Educational and Social Sciences - also in German-language versions. In this way, we can prepare our graduates for leadership positions in a broad range of topics in vocational education and training in a staged programme. This is not only about understanding educational processes, thinking in terms of curriculum theory and developing didactic models and concepts, planning in relation to subjects and types of school, and implementing, evaluating and reflecting on vocational education in a way that is appropriate for the target group. Students should also develop a deeper scientific understanding of central topics and issues in vocational education and training with a comprehensive knowledge of vocational education and training practice in initial and continuing education and training. And of course, graduates should also be able to recognise, compare and evaluate regional, national and international developments in vocational education and training. This complexity is very demanding, but it is also what makes our programme so special."
